Victorian Fernery Revived

This ornate Victorian fernery was purchased as an estate sale recently. I am pretty sure it is a reproduction since it is in such good shape when I bought it. I did not even have to be sanded, just thoroughly cleaned. But it is handmade! And regardless of its age, old or young, it is lovely and so versatile for decorating. Plants (or other items) can be put in the top and decorative items on the bottom shelf.

I painted the first coat in a deep forest green. The second coat of paint was ASCP Old Red. I accented the piece using ASCP Graphite. It as finished with a soft clear wax.

A close up of the scroll work and the painted finish.

Isn’t that scroll work gorgeous?

I can imagine this piece filled with ferns on a sun porch and then as fall approaches it can display white pumpkins, fall grasses and other dried items. Then at Christmas, fill it with green boughs, shiny tree bulbs and pinecones.  Delightful.

It is suitable for acovered porch, hallway, entrance, sun porch or a breakfast room.

My furniture pieces are painted with either Annie Sloan or CeCe Caldwell’s eco-friendly chalk paint and protected with multiple coats of soft wax. Some are hand-distressed for a gently aged, shabby-chic look; some are dry brushed for an antiqued, one-of-a-kind feel. Both paints are 100% Natural and biodegradable without VOC’s or harmful chemicals.

Keep in mind that vintage or antique furniture transformations may have nicks, bumps or slight imperfections. This is part of their character and charm and I embrace their lovely diversity, beauty and character.  Please understand that handcrafted products are likely to have slight variations in color, texture or finish.
