Rustic Natural Holiday Decor at the Small House

Live simply so that others might simply live.  Ann Sexton

I favor simple, rustic and natural materials in my holiday decor.

My favorite mantle ever was the first year I had move to the small house that I decorated with just cones gathered from under our tall white pines, greenery boughs and a neighbors hydrangea flowers beautiful in their green and purple faded colors.  We had moved here in late October and I had been swamped with painting, unpacking and trying to create a new home for us. I didn’t even know where the ornament boxes were stashed in the big old pole barn (I have no photographs of that mantle) so gathered the natural materials and fashioned a kind of minimalist homespun holiday.

Through the years I have continued this same simple style; adding grapevine stars, a Christmas flag and modest twinkling white lights and find myself decorating less and less each year, by choice.

Juniper greens and rose hips gathered in the nearby Allegan Forest fill a vintage nail barrel at our front door.

Happy holidays and a very merry 2013!
