Fall Finery at The Small House

Autumn has arrived at last in SW Michigan. While the days are still warm here the nights are cool and the lovely but fleeting blaze of color is coming on quickly. And when you live in the countryside fall can be such a peaceful time.

I snapped some photographs this week to “show-off” our property at a time when many of us fall for autumn. While the other seasons are also lovely on our five-acre rural property, I think that fall is the prettiest of all the seasons here. It’s like a last-minute burst of beauty just before the snowfall arrives. The natural character of our trees, shrubs and ornamental grasses definitely lend themselves to fall color here and I am proud to say I planned it that way.

Let’s start our color tour now on our little patch of paradise!

The Small House front door entry way; sidewalks, trellis and gardens. Just look a the deep fucia color of that Burning Bush!

Our three-season porch entry point decorated for Autumn. This is where most everyone enters our home so I like it to look special too.

THE LAND:

The side meadow at the pole barn with stacks of firewood and Sassafras and native, wild Dogwoods along the edge. This area is currently undeveloped and someday I hope will hold a corral and goats.

The back meadow garden pathway from studio to pole barn and Gene’s blacksmith forge. Ornamental grasses in bloom and the forest edge highlight this area.

The Sassafras shine bright against the White Pines and other deciduous trees of the forest.

Evergreens, Burning Bush and St. John’s Wort’s shrubbery in the garden bed lined in field stones.

POLE BARN:

The Ornamental Grasses bed along the side of the pole barn turn lovely colors too.

THE POOL:

A corner bed at the pool shows off the small pool house (and hides the ugly but necessary chain link fence!)

THE STUDIO:

Decorated for our October open house, the White Oak Design studio puts its best foot forward this fall.

  1. I especially liked all the dried hydrangea blooms along with the pumpkin and the scarecrow

  2. Beautiful home and gardens, I saw you on Hometalk with your pressed leaves on canvas! Smiles, Cyndi

    • Thanks Cyndi. I saw that you are now following me on Hometalk. I jumped on your profile and it looks like you are a gardener and crafter too. That canvas is covered in my homemade plant papers and then embellished using my pressed leaves. In that case those are Sassafras, I believe. Then three coats of matt medium. I like the name of your business, cute! Thanks for your interest!!
