Goodbye October – Hello November!

Fall is a very busy time for us at the Small House.

The process of our fall garden shutdown starts with my bringing in the house plants and washing the windows. Gene drain’s the water out of the pool and changes the studio over from the pool well to the house well. We oil and start-up the boiler and take off three screen doors and put on three storm doors. I cut back the perennials and shrubs, and on and on it goes.

Then the leaf pick-up work begins. That a HUGE job you cannot imagine… some 100 hours later the leaves are up and laid them onto the woodland paths and under the pine trees. This “Fall Rush” does not end until everything is done and it’s almost November and the snow has fallen and some years it is December before we rest. It’s a LOT of work but this is what it takes to maintain such large gardens and a park-like 5-acre property to our high standards.

Our friend Barry came to cut down some more trees this week that blew down in the big wind last spring and some more trees died from the flood extension project cutting their roots so that had project to be monitored as well.

Gene spent yesterday mowing down the meadow and the perennial flowers edge. I’ll let these photographs tell you the story of our goodbye to October.
